Not All Water – Resistant Wristwatches are Really Resistant to Water

You should not expect that a wristwatch with marking “water-resistant” is designed for swimming or even diving. Actually, there are wristwatches of various water resistance: while some timekeepers can withstand deep contact with water, other timepiece break down after short time after being in water. Most water resistant timepieces can withstand short contact with water, but these must not be used for swimming and of course, they cannot be used for diving.
Before getting a waterproof wristwatch you must find out what the markings on the watch mean. The marking “water resistant” or “waterproof” 3 ATM (30 m) means that your watch will withstand contact with water, but you cannot swim with such a wristwatch. Timepieces with resistance to water to 50 m are not designed for diving, however, such watches can be worn while swimming or taking a shower. The greatest wristwatches are those with water resistance to 10ATM (100 m), these can be used for diving.
What to imitation wristwatches, most of such watches are marked as water-resistant, but this does not mean that they are used for diving. Even a Rolex Perpetual Date doublet timepiece that is a precise duplicate of an original Rolex dive wristwatch, is not very waterproof. Though an imitation Rolex wristwatch astonishes by its similarity to the genuine watch model, it is not perfectly the same as an original Rolex wristwatch. Keep in mind that fake watches damaged by water are not accepted for refund, the same refers to original timepieces that are not marked as water resistant to 10 ATM or more.
