Most water resistant timepieces can withstand short contact with water, but these must not be used for swimming and of course, they cannot be used for diving.
Before getting a waterproof wristwatch you must find out what the markings on the watch mean. The marking “water resistant” or “waterproof” 3 ATM (30 m) means that your watch will withstand contact with water, but you cannot swim with such a wristwatch. Timepieces with resistance to water to 50 m are not designed for diving, however, such watches can be worn while swimming or taking a shower. The greatest wristwatches are those with water resistance to 10ATM (100 m), these can be used for diving.
